I met with jazz keyboard player and composer, John Medeski (of Medeski, Martin & Wood) tonight at the Highline Ballroom, during soundcheck for his gig w/ side project Heaven On Earth - featuring the great James Carter on saxophone. I shot a few portraits of Medeski for the cover story of NYC based magazine All About Jazz. Keep an eye out for my work in the upcoming November issue...

Fresh buns, straight out o' the oven

I feel like I've neglected you all once again, as it's been about two weeks since my last post. This past month has been incredibly hectic, forcing me to produce such a high volume of work, I've had little-to-no time for post-production and pork bun blogging. Fortunately, the eclectic array of jobs I've taken have been thoroughly enjoyable, stimulating, and continue to remind me just how much I love what I do.

From shooting Jeff Daly & Kelly Zingone's wedding in the Catskills (much more to come),

to meeting Davy Hughes (Operations Manager of the Union Square Farmer's Market) at 5am last Saturday, to shadow him for 13 hours, and document the overall operations of NYC's largest greenmarket,

(sunrise at Union Sq. Greenmarket)

to evening event photography gigs for Durst Fetner Residential Properties, to spending the last 3 days on staff at Starchefs.com's "International Chef's Congress" at the Park Avenue Armory -

Norman Van Aken
about the role each chef

)

(Iron Chef, Masaharu Morimoto, demonstrates his skill in
using an entire fish from head to tail - in 45 minutes).

...I've had my fair share of work cut out for me. Thank you for baring with me while I take the time to edit hundreds of photos for my clients before I can start throwing them up on the ol' Pork Bun.

And with that, I'd like to share some personal work, because Max Flatow still shoots for the love of shooting, and not just for $$$ - damn straight!

Oh...and this is my cat, Georgie, hangin' with the fellas at Ethan Dropkin's lake house in the Catskills. He's the one that's second from the left, with the purple nails.

Greetings from Santa Monica

In beautiful Santa Monica on behalf of Downwind Magazine....Arrived at LAX early this afternoon and strolled around town for a bit, trying to acclimate myself with the area I'll be working in for the next 24 hrs. After shooting two weddings over the last 2 days, I'm running on little to no sleep. A good night's rest is certainly in order, but I assure you that more photos will be posted tomorrow, after the shoot. Til' then...

The Brown Family Annual Tomato Tasting

This past year has been an unusually tough year for tomato farmers - not just from the sudden explosion of late blight (a plant disease that attacks both tomatoes and potatoes), but also due to the massive amounts of rainfall we've had here in the northeast. Luckily, Norman Brown of Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, had (what some would call) success with his 15+ different strains of tomato - grown right here in Kings County.

On August 10th, 2009, Norman and his family hosted their annual tomato tasting at Superfine in DUMBO, Brooklyn. More than 10 different types of tomatoes were lined up on the bar, where guests would fill their plates and stomachs, and vote on their favorite strain of Mr. Brown's delectable crop.

offered at the tasting

Guests were given 3 "voting coins" upon arrival. You
could use all 3 to vote for one tomato, or you could distribute
them among your favorites. These are the tallied votes that
decided which tomato would be crowned "king of 2009".

Aunt Ruby's German Green tomato took the crown

My Clients Have Talent

I'm very pleased to share a link of this video montage that Daniel Pernikoff put together as his "save the date" for his October wedding in St. Louis. Daniel and his wife (they technically already tied the knot at City Hall),Jessica, asked me to come out to Missouri to photograph their wedding in the Fall. As part of their photo package, we conducted a series of engagement portraits here in Brooklyn's Coney Island.

Daniel, being the super-creative and talented motion graphics designer that he is, put together this video literally within minutes of my delivery of the images. Enjoy!

On Assignment: Gathering of the Vibes

It's been about a year since the inception of the Roast Pork Bun blog. If I recall correctly, my first posting was from a Crosby, Stills and Nash concert at Central Park's Summer Stage. Now about 365 days, 104 blog-posts later, I'm in Bridgeport, CT, sitting backstage in the press tent at the Gathering of the Vibes music festival - headlined by Crosby, Stills, and Nash. That's some pretty heady stuff.

The festival is 4 days long, running from Thursday, the 23rd, to Sunday, the 26th. It's Friday night, and we've got a ways to go. I'll try to post images as often as I can, so here's a small selection from yesterday and today. As always, more to come.
